I can understand ruling that reading an e-book on a Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, iPad, etc. is a forbidden act on Shabbat because it is not within the spirit of Shabbat. That is to say, that things not in keeping with the spirit of the Sabbath day can pull us . But if an elevator can be created which technically doesn't violate any of the laws, then they can fully experience both aspects of Shabbat - enjoying it, and not doing "work." This is how a loophole can be pious, for it lets the Jews fulfill both the letter and the spirit of the law in the best way possible.

Note: "Yordim" is a Hebrew word which can be translated either as 'descending' flights in an elevator, or as 'emigrants from Israel." Sources: D.R. Bannett - The Sabbath Elevator Question, Elevators and Shabbat, The Institute for Science and Halacha. Rabbi L.Y. Halperin - Shabbat and Electricity, The Institute for Science and Halacha. In contrast, The Shabbat Elevator, a remarkable book-length essay on Sabbath subterfuges, is not as effective as a psychodynamic explanation. Dundes does show convincingly that Jewish ritual culture, in which Shabbat observance is so central, necessarily produces a set of strategies for the modern world. To those outside the Orthodox ambit.

A secular Jew himself, he burst into laughter when he heard the explanation for this form of Sabbath circumvention. He then embarked on a wide-ranging research project to assemble the various examples of Sabbath subterfuges in Jewish law and custom.

The Shabbat Elevator and Other Sabbath Subterfuges some of the most salient forms of circumvention are described. These include: riding a special Shabbat elevator, unscrewing the lightbulb in the refrigerator, constructing an eruv (a space extending one's domicile so that objects may be carried outside the home), and relying on the services.

The Sabbath is the day of rest each week after six days of work. The resemblances to the ancient Babylonian shapattu, the day of the full moon, as well as the biblical juxtaposition of the Sabbath with the new moon festival (Ro ʾ sh Ḥ odesh) in the Bible, have often been.
